According to fuel used :

According to number of cylinder:
* Single cylinder engine
* Multi cylinder engine

According to the arrangement of cylinders:

*V-engine
*In-line engine
*Radial engine

According to the cycle of operation:
*Two stroke engine
*Four stroke engine

According to the method of ignition:
*Spark ignition (SI) engine
*Compression ignition (CI) engine

According to the method of cooling the cylinder:

* water cooled engine

According to their application:
*Stationary engine
*Automobile engine
