LEAF SPRINGS

Leaf spring is a suspension system for vehicles that has been used as far back as medieval times. They were originally called Carriage or Laminated springs.

The spring leaf is made up of an arc -shape, slender piece of steel that is stacked with the same material in smaller size and bolted together creating a reinforced bow-like item. It is then attached to the rear axle and the chasis provideing support to any additional weight that is added to the vehicles, preventing the axle from buckling in and snapping from the pressure pf an extremely amount of weight that it was not originally designed to carry.

PURPOSE OF LEAF SPRINGS:

The over all purpose of a leaf spring is to provide support for a vehicles. It also provides for a smoother ride absorbing any bumps or potholes in the road. Leaf springs are also used to locate the axle and Controll the height at which the vehicle rides and helps keep the tires aligned on the road.

Because of its benefits leaf springs are in high demand. Casual transportation is just one of the ways leaf springs have contribution to our transportation industry. These days leaf springs are more popular with heavy commercial vehicle like Trucks,SUVs.Vans

MATERIALS USED FOR LEAF SPRINGS:

The material used fot leaf springs is usually a plain carbon steel having 0.90 to 1.0%of carbon. The leaves are heat treated after the forming process. The heat treatment of springs steel product greater strength and therefore greater load capacity. Greater range of deflection and better fatigue properties

ADVANTAGES OF LEAF SPRINGS:

1.The way the suspension is constructed is really simple and strong ,acting as alinKage and holds the axle in position

2.Extra weight and costs are reduced because of the rear axle location. tjis eleminates the need for trailing arms and apanhard rod
3. Leaf springs support the weight of the chasis, making them for commercial vehicles
4. They also Controll axle damping
5. The chasis roll can be Controlled more efficiently due to high rear moment centre and wide spring base

DISADVANTAGES OF LEAF SPRINGS:
1.They are not always the easiest to install- but there is a clear process to follow that makes life much easier
2.The ride comfort is not as great because pf the inter-leaf friction between each leaf
3. Over time, the springs tend to loose shape and can sag
4.Wind - up and vibrations can be caused by acceleration  and breaking torque . The wimd -up can also cause nose-diving and rear-end squat
